Last week, my school got a neat opportunity to send kids to do a program called "Break the Ice" through the Colorado Avalanche hockey team. The program lets for kids from low income neighborhoods have the opportunity to learn to skate and be taught by some Avalanche players. As my kids were walking out the door, I asked who had skated before and all 7 of them told me that they had never. So, hearing their stories and the chance they had to skate with the players was quite the opportunity.
After the program, they each got free tickets to go to the game. The P.E. teacher opened it up to the staff to go also so I got tickets for my family here as a thank you for basement labor. We figured it would be seats really high up and not good, but when we looked at the stubs, we were sitting in the 100 level 10 rows back mid ice. Wow. Each tickets value was $122. Incredible.
It was quite fun, we enjoyed the seats and the night out. When I looked around at others from my school that went, they were all nearby. One of my kids was even in our section. I kept running into his family, it was cool to see them so excited. Even after the game, he still had a huge grin on his face as he enjoyed his first hockey game. I can expect to hear all about that come Monday.
